Sarafa rate vs the international gold price

The Sarafa rate is the price of 24K gold declared each day by the All Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association. Bazaars across Pakistan follow it, and it is the number news outlets report.

The international price is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce on world markets. Converted at the dollar rate and into tolas, it gives a “parity” price. The Sarafa rate usually sits above or below parity: import duties and restrictions, the open-market dollar (which can be dearer than the interbank rate), local demand in the wedding season and the time of day each price was taken all move the gap.

Aaj ka Rate shows both, the Sarafa rate as the market rate and parity as a clearly labelled estimate, with the gap in percent. A gap that suddenly widens is worth noticing; it is not a signal to buy or sell.
