What is a tola, and how is the gold rate per tola vs per 10 grams worked out?
A tola is the traditional unit for weighing gold and silver in Pakistan and India, and one tola is 11.6638 grams (exactly 180 grains). To turn a per-tola gold rate into a per-10-gram rate, divide it by 11.6638 and multiply by 10.

The grain is the same unit troy weight is built on: the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) gives one troy ounce as 480 grains, or 31.1034768 grams. So one tola is 180 ÷ 480 = 0.375 troy ounce, 10 grams is about 0.857 tola, and one troy ounce, the unit world gold prices are quoted in, is about 2.667 tola.
Jewellers also use the masha (1/12 tola, about 0.972 g) and the ratti (1/8 masha, about 0.1215 g) for small weights.
A worked example with a round number (not today’s rate): Rs 100,000 per tola ÷ 11.6638 = Rs 8,573.5 per gram, which is Rs 85,735 per 10 grams.
